Jakarta — The Ministry of Tourism has made strengthening safety, security, and comfort for tourists the foundation of quality tourism. ‘This is a homework that relates closely to us as tourism service providers, namely us as human resources,’ said Deputy for Resources and Institutional Affairs of the Ministry of Tourism Martini Mohamad Paham at the 2026 Tourism National Coordination Conference in Jakarta on Wednesday. Martini said the Ministry has prepared various tourism safety training modules for high-risk activities such as mountain hiking, water-based tourism, white-water rafting, and snorkelling. The programme is delivered through collaboration involving all parties—from associations, academics, and tourism practitioners—and strengthened through competency-based training and professional certification. The Ministry also runs a task-support programme for mountain and water tourism guides by providing tourism safety training to 30 participants across 38 provinces. ‘The 30 people are expected to share their knowledge with others,’ he said. In terms of tourism service, the Ministry has also prepared the Indonesian National Work Competence Standard (SKKNI) which covers standards for tourist services from the planning stage to the return from the destination. ‘This document can be used not only by local governments but also by academics, industry, and professionals,’ said Martini. He added that the government is continuing to sharpen the direction of developing the Tourism Polytechnic (Poltekpar) as a centre of excellence for vocational tourism education, aimed at producing professional human resources with global competitiveness. Previously, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana had also stated that the Ministry had prepared five strategic programmes to face challenges in the national tourism sector. One of these programmes relates to enhancing tourist safety. The programme to improve tourism safety will focus on training and certification to increase the preparedness of tourism stakeholders in facing various risks.
