Tourism Ministry optimises music tourism development
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Tourism Ministry is seeking to optimise the development of special-interest tourism services in the music sector by supporting the organisation of music performances.
“A concert has an extraordinary economic impact for the Indonesian people. So at the Tourism Ministry, we have a programme under the Deputy for Events,” said Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.
“This year we are supporting 206 events across Indonesia, including regional events, national events, international events and MICE,” she said.
To illustrate the economic potential of hosting music concerts, she noted that the 2023 Coldplay concert generated an economic impact valued at up to 75 million US dollars, or approximately Rp1.1 trillion.
She said that the concerts by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in Indonesia in October and November 2026 could also deliver significant economic benefits.
Andrea Bocelli is scheduled to perform at the Borobudur Temple complex in Magelang, Central Java, on 31 October 2026, and at the Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO) in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on 3 November 2026, as part of his “Romanza 30th Anniversary World Tour” in Indonesia.
Widiyanti estimated that the Andrea Bocelli concerts at Borobudur and JIEXPO could each attract up to 7,000 and 9,000 spectators respectively, and generate economic benefits worth 44 million US dollars, or around Rp792 billion.
“And with the presence of over-the-top services on Apple TV or Netflix, this will also increase the visibility of Indonesian destinations, particularly Borobudur, around the world,” she said.
The Tourism Ministry is also coordinating with relevant ministries and agencies to ease visa processing for foreign artists performing in Indonesia, simplify concert permit procedures and the shipment of concert logistics, and support concert promotion on the Indonesia.travel channel.
“We also have social media and videotrons. But we will also promote through mass media and provide information to all Indonesian embassies around the world to promote this event,” she said, referring to the Andrea Bocelli concert.
In addition, according to her, the Tourism Ministry is collaborating with travel service providers and tour operators to offer tourism packages that include attending music concerts.
“We will create several tourism packages together with travel agents and tour operators. So that tourists coming from other cities or from abroad can travel to enjoy tourist destinations around Borobudur in addition to watching the concert,” she said.
“Thus, economic turnover is not only from ticket sales, but also from hotels and spending in the surrounding areas,” she added.
