Tourism Ministry Invites Public to Holiday 'The New Way #DiIndonesiaAja'
The Ministry of Tourism is inviting the public to explore tourist destinations close to home through the ‘New Way of Holiday #DiIndonesiaAja’ campaign during the 2026 school holiday period. Ministry spokesperson Nia Niscaya stated the campaign is based on the travel trends of domestic tourists, who tend to choose nearby destinations because they are easier to reach and require lower costs. ‘Where do Indonesians go on holiday? It is very clear that travel occurs within the province,’ Nia said during the campaign press conference in Jakarta on Thursday. According to her, the tendency of tourists to choose destinations close to home is also in line with global trends showing people are travelling more within their immediate regions. Ministry of Tourism data shows that inter-regency or inter-city travel within a single province is the largest contributor to domestic tourist trips. In 2025, intra-provincial travel accounted for 67.7 percent of total domestic tourist trips. ‘This shows that people tend to make short-distance trips. This is due to cost considerations, easier access, and the many new attractions in our surrounding areas,’ she said. Nia explained that the ‘New Way of Holiday’ concept encourages the public to change the perception that travelling must be to faraway places and requires a large budget. According to her, tourists can gain new experiences by visiting destinations they have never explored before, including tourist villages that offer activities and cultures different from urban daily life. ‘The perception that a holiday must be expensive, long, and far is no longer the case. We can travel around our own area that we have not yet explored, where we have not yet experienced what it offers,’ she said. In addition to utilising nearby destinations, the Ministry of Tourism is also inviting the public to use artificial intelligence technology through the MaiA platform to help plan trips according to their needs and budget. During this year’s school holiday period, the Ministry of Tourism, together with industry players, is also providing 95 travel packages involving 40 industry players, with choices of nature, culture, adventure, and marine attractions targeting the family and student segments. The Ministry of Tourism recorded that the number of domestic tourist trips from January to April 2026 reached 417.06 million trips, an increase of 1.48 percent compared to the same period the previous year. Nia expressed hope that the ‘New Way of Holiday #DiIndonesiaAja’ campaign can boost domestic tourist movement while providing an economic impact for the tourism, MSME, culinary, and creative economy sectors in various regions.
