Tourism Minister reviews readiness for UNESCO revalidation in Raja Ampat Geopark

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana reviewed the preparations for the revalidation of the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) status of Raja Ampat, including strengthening the governance of world-class tourism destinations. “The world geopark status must be maintained through strong governance, tangible conservation, and involvement of local communities,” Widiyanti said in an official statement confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday. While inspecting the Piaynemo Geosite on Tuesday (12/5/2026), Widiyanti emphasised that the UNESCO Global Geopark status is not merely an international recognition, but a long-term commitment to preserving the sustainability of the area. Therefore, synergy between environmental protection, strengthened governance, and empowerment of local communities is essential so that the benefits of tourism can be felt sustainably. She also visited Arborek Tourism Village, which received the Indonesian Tourism Village Award (ADWI) 2021. Arborek Village is considered an example of ecotourism development that successfully integrates community economic growth with the preservation of culture and marine ecosystems. Concluding the series of visits on Kri Island, Meos Mansar District, Widiyanti reviewed the shark conservation programme at Sorido Bay Resort and named one of the zebra shark eggs in incubation “Putri”, which is about to hatch. She also called on all stakeholders to have a sense of responsibility and shared ownership in maintaining the sustainability of Raja Ampat as a flagship world destination. “Our collective task for Raja Ampat is to ensure this beauty remains alive, sustainable, and beneficial for today’s and future generations,” she said.
