Touch-screen MacBook Ultra may launch in September 2026
Apple may be preparing to implement a significant update to its laptop product line, with recent reports suggesting the potential arrival of a MacBook Ultra equipped with a touch screen. According to reports from Gizmochina, rumours from the supply chain indicate that this feature represents more than just a routine specification upgrade.
Research firm Omdia suggests that Samsung Display is preparing to begin shipments of new hybrid OLED panels specifically for the MacBook Ultra. In terms of specifications, the screen sizes are expected to be 14.3 inches and 16.3 inches, which does not differ significantly from the current 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro models that currently lead Apple’s high-end laptop range.
Omdia states that Apple is expected to utilise tandem oxide TFT and RGB OLED panels, which should offer better efficiency compared to conventional OLED technology. If current schedules hold, the MacBook Ultra could make its debut around the third quarter of 2026, with September appearing to be the most likely launch month.
Perhaps more intriguing is the reported redesign accompanying this release. Apple has not undertaken a major overhaul of the MacBook Pro’s overall appearance since the introduction of the M1 Pro and M1 Max generations in 2021, when a simplified design was a deliberate move towards practicality.
Amidst these confirmed details, rumours regarding a touch screen for the MacBook Ultra are gaining traction. For years, Apple executives have openly stated that touch screens do not belong on Mac computers; therefore, reports suggesting the eventual arrival of touch support are attracting significant attention. There are also rumours that Apple may replace the current notch with a ‘Dynamic Island’ style cutout, similar to the feature found on the iPhone. Combined, these rumours depict a laptop that sits above the current MacBook Pro lineup rather than being a mere replacement. The integration of OLED technology, a thinner design, new chips, and touch screen functionality would all justify its more premium positioning.
