Toshiba Launches Compact eFuse ICs Supporting Low-Voltage Operation at 1.7 V
Kawasaki, Japan — Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) has launched four electronic fuse ICs (eFuse ICs) in its TCKE5 series, which integrates a range of functions to protect power-supply lines. Shipments began today. The new products operate with input voltages from 1.7 V to 5.5 V and are housed in a compact SOT-353F (UFV) package. The line-up comprises the TCKE501UA, TCKE501UL, TCKE502UA and TCKE502UL.
The miniaturisation of electronic equipment, alongside improved functionality and lower power consumption, has increased the use of applications requiring low-voltage power supplies, including 1.8 V power rails. Overcurrent and short-circuit protection are also needed on low-voltage power rails to improve system reliability.
The TCKE5 series operates across an input voltage range of 1.7 V to 5.5 V, making it the first Toshiba eFuse IC line-up to support 1.8 V power rails. This makes the products suitable for low-voltage applications, including SD memory cards.
The series is available in a small, low-profile SOT-353F (UFV) package, helping to reduce PCB mounting area and support space-saving, high-density designs in products such as wearable accessories and IoT devices.
In addition to the short-circuit protection provided by physical fuses, such as glass-tube and chip current fuses, the TCKE5 series offers overcurrent protection that cuts off output current when an overcurrent is detected. The overcurrent detection threshold (IOCP) can be set with an external resistor (RILIM), allowing the protection level to be configured to meet system requirements. Overcurrent protection also includes a delay time[1] to help prevent unnecessary shutdowns caused by momentary peak currents. These features help protect downstream circuits and contribute to improved system safety and reliability.
The line-up includes two types. In the auto-retry type, the eFuse IC automatically restores circuit operation. In the latch type, recovery is triggered by an external signal. Customers can choose the product that suits their system configuration. The series also offers products with different slew-rate settings, enabling customers to select a device that meets their power-up sequencing requirements.
Toshiba will continue to expand its eFuse IC line-up with products supporting a wide range of equipment.
[1] If the current exceeds the overcurrent detection threshold IOCP, the output is turned off after the delay time tOCP.
Applications
Power-supply circuit protection in USB devices, HDMI® devices, laptops and game consoles.
Features
Input operating voltage range: 1.7 V to 5.5 V, supporting 1.8 V, 3.3 V and 5 V power rails.
Overcurrent protection delay time: tOCP = 2.4 ms (typ.).
Compact, low-profile SOT-353F package: 2.0 × 2.1 × 0.7 mm (typ.).
Notes: Section 16 of the datasheet describes precautions to be taken when using the products. [3] 500 μs pulse, 2% duty cycle. [4] The pulsed testing technique used in this test keeps the junction temperature approximately equal to the ambient temperature. [5] This parameter is for reference only.
