Top seeds through to Cigna quarterfinals

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Suwandi and Febi Widhiyanto, who failed to bring Indonesia to the next stage in the Davis Cup matches, chalked up easy wins over their opponents to reach the Cigna Open tennis tournament quarterfinals here on Thursday.

Top seed Suwandi faced no serious problems in dispatching Hendri Davin 6-2, 6-0 while second seed and last year's winner Febi eased past Sunu Wahyu Trijati 6-2, 6-1 at the Hilton Executive Club tennis courts, according to Antara.

Indonesia lost to Uzbekistan 2-3 in the first round of the Asia/Oceania Group One in Tashkent at the weekend.

Their fellow national players Peter Handoyo and Prima Simpati Aji were also through to the next stage. Fifth seed Prima, whose Tashkent trip appeared to be his Davis Cup debut, conceded only two games in his 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of Ariawan Poerbo.

U.S.-based Peter, who has decided to stay to join the tournament after his Davis Cup duty, had to work a little bit harder in the second set before overcoming Nesa Artha 6-1, 6-4.

The sixth seed in the tournament skipped the previous events because of his academic commitments.

The other four players in the quarterfinals include Dede Suhendar Dinata, Ferdy Fauzi, Sebastian Dacosta and Hendri Susilo Pramono.

Meanwhile, junior player Ayu Fani, Villa Daniela and Maya Rosa were the surprise winners in the women's division, upsetting their more rated opponents on the day.

Ayu humiliated fourth seed Eny Sulistyowati 7-5, 6-2. Villa had an unexpected easy task in beating fifth seed Dian Anggraeni 6-2, 6-2 while Maya blanked Mudarwati 6-4, 6-0.

However, the top three seeds were unstoppable in their cruise through to the next stage. Top seed and last year's winner Liza Andriani lost only one game to stop Illiana Indica 6-1, 6-0.

Second seed Wukirasih Sawondari walked all over Nana Lidya Luciana to win 6-1, 6-2, while third seed Sandy Gumulya outplayed Nurma Mangunsong 6-3, 6-1.
