Top players lose in preliminary matches

Top singles players competing in the Sanyo Indonesia Open 2002 were surprisingly expelled from the five-star badminton championship, which is being held in the Kertajaya Sports Stadium in Surabaya, East Java.

Among them were top seeded Xia Xuanze of China, who was defeated by Malaysian Ramesh Nathan 1-15, 15-11 and 6-15, and second seeded Lin Dan also of China, who was defeated by Irwansyah, an Indonesian who plays for Wales, 9-15 and 9-15.

Indonesian men's player Hendrawan also suffered a defeat, losing 9-15 and 7-15 to China's Bao Chunlai.

Other Indonesian top players, however, proceeded to the next round, including seventh seeded Taufik Hidayat, who defeated fellow Indonesian Andi Wirya 15-10 and 15-8, and 11th seeded Marleve Mainaky, who defeated Denmark's Kesper Fangel 15-8 and 15-9.

In the women's singles, the defending champion, Indonesia's Ellen Angelina, lost to the top seeded Dane, Camilla Martin, 3-11 and 8-11.

But, Indonesian top player Lydia Jaelawijaya defeated fellow Indonesian Siti Mahiroh 13-12 and 11-8.

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles, all the Indonesian pairs proceeded to the next round.

Trikus Haryanto and Emma Ermawati defeated Thailand's Khunakom and Saralee 11-4 and 11-8, Nova Widianto and Vita Marissa defeated fellow Indonesians Mark Kido and Lilyana 11-5 and 11-9, and Bambang Supriyanto and Minarti Timur defeated seventh seeded Bjoern Siegemund and Nicol Pitro of Denmark 11-2 and 13-12.

Top seeded Jens Eriksen and Mette Schjoldager of Denmark defeated German Thomas Tesche and Carina Mette 11-2 and 11-1, while second seeded Michael Sogaard and Rieke Olsen, also of Denmark, defeated Indonesians Robby Istanto and Tetty Yunita 11-2 and 11-5. --Detik.com
