Ondel-ondel is one of the icons most deeply embedded in Jakarta’s collective memory. Unfortunately, over the past few decades, residents have grown accustomed to seeing these pairs of giant puppets shuffling wearily at traffic lights or in narrow alleyways, rattling empty tins for spare change. Its sacred and philosophical value has slowly faded, eroded by the harsh demands of street-level economics. However, a move is being prepared to restore the ‘dignity’ of this cultural icon.

Ahead of the commemoration of five centuries, or 500 years, of Jakarta in 2027, a grand vision has been launched to bring Betawi culture onto the world stage. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is committed to returning local cultural symbols to their rightful place. Pramono stated that attention to Betawi culture is mandated by Law Number 2 of 2024 concerning the Special Region of Jakarta, which establishes Betawi culture as the capital’s primary culture. With this regulatory foundation, structural and cultural reforms are being undertaken.

The main focus drawing the most attention is rescuing the image of the ondel-ondel itself. Banning it from being used as a means of earning a living on the streets is a challenging first step, given its close connection to the livelihoods of some residents. ‘I want Betawi culture to be able to compete internationally. Therefore, personally as governor, I am banning ondel-ondel from being used as a way to earn a living through busking. In fact, ondel-ondel possesses extraordinary philosophical value,’ Pramono said during his speech at the 2026 Haul Akbar Ulama dan Habaib Betawi at Monas Plaza, Central Jakarta, on Friday evening (19/6/2026).

This grand plan does not stop at the narrative of prohibition alone. The Jakarta Provincial Government fully understands that banning without providing a worthy alternative stage will only stifle creativity. Consequently, a colossal project marrying noble tradition with modern aesthetics is being developed. Pramono mentioned that for the 500th anniversary of Jakarta next year, the provincial government will also present 500 ondel-ondel with a new look, designed by top-tier designers. ‘In the context of the upcoming 500th anniversary, I will showcase 500 ondel-ondel created by top designers, who will give a new face to Jakarta’s ondel-ondel,’ he said.

Imagine a grand parade where 500 ondel-ondel march majestically, displaying the intricate beauty of textiles, colours, and structures crafted by the nation’s finest creative hands. The touch of these renowned designers is projected to bridge the historical value of ondel-ondel with global tastes, without losing its original spirit, which is laden with meaning as a repellent of misfortune and a symbol of communal joy. This effort is expected to spark a new perspective, both from local residents and international tourists, that ondel-ondel is a sublime work of art worthy of display in international galleries or world-class cultural festivals.
