Top 5 Provinces with the Highest Economic Growth: Sorry, No Java!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has announced that Indonesia’s economy grew strongly beyond expectations at 5.61% on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter of 2026. Several provinces even recorded economic growth higher than the national figure. North Maluku once again became the province with the highest economic growth. North Maluku’s Regional Gross Domestic Product (PDRB) surged by 19.64% annually (yoy). North Maluku has even achieved double-digit growth for 22 quarters or more than five years. Below North Maluku is West Nusa Tenggara, which grew by 13.64%. The top five provinces with the highest economic growth are all filled by provinces outside Java. The top five provinces with the highest growth are North Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and Riau Islands. Conversely, there are provinces that experienced contraction in the first quarter of 2026. Central Papua experienced a contraction of 8.38% in January-March 2026. Central Papua’s economy has been contracting for the last seven quarters or since the third quarter of 2024.
