Amidst the ongoing global economic uncertainty shadowing various nations, optimism regarding the national economic outlook is considered a crucial factor in maintaining the confidence of the business community and investors. This view emerged after the founder of Artha Graha Peduli, Tomy Winata, expressed his belief in Indonesia’s future during the launch of the 36th anniversary celebrations of the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel Bali recently.

During the event, Tomy emphasised that Indonesia maintains a strong appeal to global investors. According to him, Indonesia’s strategic position and its vital role in the world economy serve as significant capital to continue attracting investment.

Senior Researcher at Populi Center, Yugolastarob Komeini, assessed that the optimism expressed by Tomy is based on several fundamental factors that remain Indonesia’s primary strengths. He noted that Indonesia remains one of the most promising investment destinations, supported by a vast domestic market, abundant natural resources, and a continuously improving business climate.

With a population of over 270 million, Yugolastarob continued, Indonesia possesses a robust consumption base. This condition makes the national economy relatively more resilient to external shocks compared to many other countries that are heavily dependent on exports.

“In addition to the strength of the domestic market, Indonesia also possesses various flagship commodities that attract global investors, such as nickel, coal, palm oil, rubber, and tin. The downstreaming programmes continuously promoted by the government are expected to increase the added value of domestic industries while opening new investment opportunities in various strategic sectors,” he said on Tuesday (26/06/2024).

Yugolastarob also highlighted the government’s steps in improving the investment climate through various regulatory reforms. The implementation of the Job Creation Law and the Online Single Submission (OSS) system, for instance, are seen as providing ease for business actors in managing permits and conducting business activities in Indonesia.

According to Yugolastarob, such messages indicate that optimism must go hand in hand with mature planning and sound risk management. With such an approach, business growth can proceed in a healthy and sustainable manner.

He added that while Indonesia still faces several challenges—ranging from strengthening the manufacturing sector and improving human resource quality to logistics efficiency and accelerating the development of the green economy—these challenges do not diminish Indonesia’s significant opportunity to become one of the world’s economic growth hubs in the future.

“This kind of spirit and optimism needs to be maintained collectively. Amidst unstable global conditions, Mr Tomy’s statement provides inspiration and confidence, not only for the public but also for business players and investors,” said Yugolastarob.

Previously, Tomy Winata urged all parties to maintain an optimistic stance in driving the economic engine. “Indonesia remains good and holds prestige for investors. Our position is very strategic and needed by the world. As Indonesians, we must be confident,” said Tomy Winata.

Nevertheless, Tomy Winata reminded the business community to prioritise the principle of prudence when making business decisions.

“The important thing is that traders and entrepreneurs should not be easily provoked. Do not engage in excessive investment. Adjust to your capabilities and follow the applicable regulations. If there is a potential opportunity, only then should we enter,” he said.
