Public told to build sport facilities

City councilors yesterday called on the private sector to help the city administration build sport facilities.

Soegijo, chairman of the Council's Commission E on social welfare, said he was concerned over the scarcity of sport facilities in the city which can be used by the public free of charge and is open for all levels of society.

"Considering the financial constraints of the city administration, the private sector is encouraged to take part in building public sports facilities and training coaches as well as in financing sports events," Soegijo was quoted by Antara as saying.

Meanwhile another councilor from Commission E, Ronggo S. Tahir, said, ideally, every district should have at least one public sport facility.

"Not every district has one now," Ronggo stated. (11)

Parking fees will increase

The municipal administration is considering increasing the parking fees, an official said Tuesday.

Prawoto Sutrisno Danumihardjo, an assistant to the city's secretary on economic and development, said the raise is expected to increase the city's income, reduce the use of private vehicles and make traffic more manageable.

He added that the plan will be supported by the provision of a more appropriate mass transportation facilities.

Prawoto refused to reveal the new fees or when they will become effective. He said that this was because the administration is preoccupied with other, more important things such as preparing for the competition to win the Adipura trophy, the award for the most well-managed city.

He was quoted by Suara Karya daily as saying that the plan would be brought to the city council for approval.

Councilor Helmy A.R. Syihab said that the council has not yet received the proposal.

Parking fees currently at Rp 300 for cars and Rp 100 for motorbikes.

According to Prawoto, the administration expected the Municipal Parking Authority to collect Rp 14.6 billion (US$6.78) in parking revenues during the 1994/1995 fiscal year, up from Rp 9.7 billion ($4.5 million) in the previous year. (03)

Highland Gathering planned next Sunday

The annual celebration of Scottish culture, widely-known as the Highland Gathering, will be held this year on May 29 at the athletic track of the Senayan sports complex in Central Jakarta.

Crawford Hogart, chairman of the 20th Jakarta Highland Gathering, said in a statement released here yesterday that the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch, Scotland's senior Highland regiment, will also participate in the event.

The gathering usually becomes a day of sport and spectacle, with music, dancing, athletics and children games, as well as lots of food and drink.

Hogart said that the proceeds from the gathering will be used to help support hospital treatment for the needy, such as the purchase of hearing aids for deaf children and providing education for the disadvantaged. (bsr)

Depok to become a mayoralty

The Bogor legislative council has agreed to change the status of Depok township into a mayoralty.

The approval was announced in a plenary session on Monday.

Otto Mary, spokesman of the Bogor legislative council, said the status change was in line with a 1990 West Java gubernatorial decree on the province's long-term development master plan.

The decree stipulates that four townships, including Depok, will be changed into mayoralties, Bisnis Indonesia daily reported yesterday.

Eddie Yoso Martadipura, a Bogor regent, said he would apply for an approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs for the change in Depok status.

A West Java provincial councilor, Eddy Sofyan, meanwhile confirmed that Bekasi township will become a mayoralty in 1995 or 1996. (03)

No entertainment around Idul Adha

The governor's office has issued a Gubernatorial Decree requiring that amusement centers close on the Idul Adha Islamic sacrifice day.

The decree also forbid amusement centers to operate for during certain hours a day before and a day after the holiday.

RS Moeseno, deputy governor in charge of welfare, said yesterday the decree applies to all entertainment centers, except those located in star rated hotels.

The entertainment centers in question include massage parlors, steambaths, night clubs, discos, live music shows, karaoke shops, traditional dance performances, bars, pubs, coffee houses, health centers, traditional health centers and billiard centers.

The places should close between 5 p.m and 12 p.m. on May 20; all day long on May 21 or on the Idul Adha holiday; up to 10 a.m. on May 22.

Moeseno said harsh punishments will be doled out for establishments that violate the decree.(jsk)
