Toll Operator Launches Microsleep Prevention Operation to Prevent Accidents
A preventive safety operation has been launched by toll road operator PT Bakauheni Terbanggi Besar Toll to minimise the potential for traffic accidents caused by driver fatigue, particularly during early morning hours for long-distance travellers during the mudik (homecoming) season.
Direktur Utama I Wayan Mandia stated in Bandar Lampung on Saturday that during the operation, officers conducted self-assessments of driver physical conditions and vehicle safety inspections for road users passing through or stopping at Rest Area KM 116 B.
“These inspections aim to ensure drivers are in sufficiently good condition to continue their journey and that vehicles are in safe and roadworthy condition,” Mandia said.
The activity forms part of the company’s commitment to supporting toll road user safety, particularly during the mudik period when vehicle traffic intensity is high. “Road user safety is our primary priority. Through this microsleep operation, we want to remind drivers to always pay attention to their physical condition during travel, especially in the early morning hours when drowsiness is most prevalent,” Mandia stated.
Officers also provided education to road users about the dangers of microsleep—the phenomenon of falling asleep momentarily without awareness due to fatigue whilst driving. Users were advised against forcing themselves to continue driving if they feel drowsy and were encouraged to rest briefly at available rest areas to recover before resuming their journey.
Additionally, officers installed reflective stickers and scotlight devices on the rear of trucks and pick-up vehicles lacking reflective safety equipment. These installations aim to increase vehicle visibility during nighttime driving, thereby minimising traffic accident risks, particularly for commercial transport vehicles.
The operation is expected to raise awareness among road users about the importance of maintaining physical alertness whilst driving and making proper use of available rest facilities when feeling tired or drowsy. “With these measures, the 2026 Eid homecoming travel period is expected to proceed safely, smoothly, and with all travellers arriving safely at their destinations,” Mandia concluded.
