West Manggarai Resort Police in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has launched a regional operation titled “Semana Santa Turangga 2026”, an integrated security agenda lasting 15 days from 1 to 15 April 2026. The operation targets not only security aspects but also ensures the comfort of Christian congregations in carrying out their series of worship from Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, to Easter Sunday.

West Manggarai Police Chief, AKB Christian Kadang, emphasised that this year’s security approach prioritises cross-sectoral collaboration. Not only security apparatus, but various local government elements and civil society are also involved.

A total of 150 combined personnel are deployed, consisting of personnel from the West Manggarai Police Resort, sub-district police, and support from Battalion B Pelopor Satbrimob of NTT Provincial Police. They work alongside the TNI, Civil Service Police Unit, Transportation Department, Scouts, and mosque youth groups.

“We are not working alone. This is a joint effort by all elements to ensure the congregation can worship safely and devoutly,” said Christian on Thursday (2/4).

Among the well-structured security schemes, one aspect that draws attention is the active involvement of mosque youth in guarding churches. At several worship points in Labuan Bajo, Muslim youths are seen helping with security, managing parking, and welcoming arriving congregations.

This phenomenon is not merely symbolic but reflects the long-established social relations in West Manggarai—a region inhabited by a diverse society with varied religious and cultural backgrounds.

“The presence of mosque youth is the true face of West Manggarai. Tolerance here is not a slogan but a real practice in the field,” said Christian.

Amid increasing polarisation in various regions, the cross-faith collaborative practice in Labuan Bajo serves as an indicator that social harmony remains strongly maintained. Religious celebrations become not only spiritual spaces but also moments to strengthen community social cohesion.

From a technical standpoint, West Manggarai Police conducted a comprehensive mapping of potential vulnerabilities. A total of 62 churches across the district are included in the security list, both Catholic and Protestant churches.

Six of them are designated as top priorities, considering the high number of congregants and intensity of worship activities.

To anticipate various possibilities, from security disturbances to traffic congestion, authorities have established four Security Posts (Pospam) and one Service Post (Posyan) at strategic points.

These posts function as field control centres as well as places where the public can obtain quick information and assistance.

“Pospam and Posyan are important parts of our rapid response system. The public can directly access help if needed,” explained Christian.

Additionally, routine patrols have been intensified, especially in public areas, crowd centres, and main routes leading to worship locations. Security is also conducted openly and covertly to ensure the situation remains conducive.

Easter security in Labuan Bajo has a more complex dimension compared to other regions. Besides being a centre for religious activities, Labuan Bajo is also a national premier tourism destination that remains bustling with visitors, both domestic and international.

This means authorities not only safeguard worship security but also ensure tourism activities continue without disrupting the congregation’s devotion.

The balance between spiritual and economic interests poses its own challenges. However, authorities are optimistic that cross-sectoral synergy can keep both running in harmony.

Vigilance Without Disrupting Solemnity

Although the current security and public order situation is monitored as conducive, West Manggarai Police still prioritises the principle of vigilance.

“The situation is indeed safe, but we do not want to be complacent. Prevention remains the priority,” stressed Christian.

A humanistic approach is also emphasised in security measures. Officers are instructed to maintain a persuasive attitude so their presence does not disrupt worship solemnity.

More than just a security operation, Semana Santa Turangga 2026 becomes a reflection of how security, tolerance, and togetherness can go hand in hand.

In Labuan Bajo, Easter is not only a celebration for Christians but also a celebration of humanistic values that transcend religious boundaries.

“We want to ensure everything runs safely. But more than that, we want to maintain the togetherness that has been built,” concluded Christian.

Amid a world often coloured by identity tensions, Labuan Bajo shows that harmony is not impossible; it lives, grows, and is maintained together.
