Toiletries bazaar to be held at UGM

JAKARTA (JP): A one-day bazaar to sell toiletries will be held on Sunday at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, the organizers said in a press release on Wednesday.

The event's organizers, Arupa, said they were seeking producers willing to provide packages worth Rp 21,050 which they hope will be sold for as little as Rp 2,000. They have set a target of 3,000 packages.

Arupa said after conducting a survey of students' purchasing power and the going price of toiletries in Yogyakarta, that Rp 2,000 was all that students could afford to pay for detergent, soap, a bottle of shampoo, a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste.

Organizers hope that with the help of producers, donated packages will be sold "for at least a 75 percent discount" at the bazaar entitled Cutting Expenses is Healthy (Ngirit itu Sehat).

According to recent reports, students across the country have been drastically cutting their expenses, including on meals and toiletries. Regarding the possibility of wealthy people buying the packages intended for the poor, organizers said "the event would be based entirely on the honesty of participants." (anr)
