Todung Mulya Lubis Steps In as Legal Counsel for Saiful Mujani

Senior advocate Todung Mulya Lubis has become the legal counsel for Professor of Political Science at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Saiful Mujani in the alleged sedition and incitement case. Todung announced this during his speech at a discussion on the case at FISIP UIN Jakarta on Thursday (23/4). Saiful Mujani was also present at the event. “I have been asked to become Saiful Mujani’s legal counsel, as he is accused of violating the constitution,” Todung stated in his address. Todung admitted he does not yet know the exact number of reports against his client. However, he affirmed his readiness to face the legal process in the case. On the other hand, he claimed he has not found strong criminal elements against Saiful. According to Todung, the alleged criminality against Saiful is too premature. “This is just making a political statement; he is not creating a political movement. So this is premature, and we will see,” he said. Todung understands that Saiful was reported under the incitement article. However, that alleged article is also premature, as many discussion forums could be reported for alleged incitement. “Everyone is saying the same thing. Because this is a reflection of the public’s anxiety and unease about the situation that is not going well,” Todung said. Besides being an advocate, Todung is also an academic. He is the founder of the Lubis, Santosa & Maramis law firm. In 2018, he served as Indonesia’s Ambassador to Norway and Iceland. Todung was part of the legal team and Deputy for Victory for Ganjar-Mahfud in the 2024 Presidential Election.
