To Strengthen National Energy Distribution Acceleration, KAI Logistik Operates Container Yard 2 Merapi
To strengthen national energy distribution, PT Kereta Api Logistik (KAI Logistik) continues to enhance its role in supporting energy resilience and optimisation. This is evidenced by the inauguration of Container Yard (CY) 2 Merapi, which began operations on 3 March 2026.
KAI Logistik’s President Director, Yuskal Setiawan, stated that this facility is part of the development of KALOG Pro services, particularly to support the management of coal transportation via rail that is efficient, reliable, and sustainable. CY 2 Merapi is designed as a strategic logistics solution that not only increases transport capacity but also addresses the increasingly dynamic challenges of energy logistics distribution.
This also represents a proactive step by the company in supporting the South Sumatra Provincial Government’s regulation, which has imposed a ban on coal trucks traversing public roads since 1 January 2026, as stipulated in the Governor of South Sumatra’s Instruction Number 500.11/004/INSTRUKSI/DISHUB/2025.
“Through rail-based transport optimisation, KAI Logistik provides a safer distribution alternative that complies with regulations and reduces reliance on road transport,” said Yuskal, quoted from his statement on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
CY 2 Merapi, located in Sirah Pulau Village, South Sumatra Province, is adjacent to the previously operational CY 1 Merapi facility by KAI Logistik. It is planned to have three entry-exit accesses directly connected to the Merapi terminal, thereby supporting smooth train movements and improving coal loading and unloading operational efficiency.
“This facility is designed with an integrated connectivity scheme between mining areas and hauling lines directly linked to the CY area, allowing all operational activities to be conducted without passing through provincial roads (crossings). This scheme aligns with efforts to minimise impacts on road infrastructure and the surrounding environment,” explained Yuskal.
With the operation of CY 2 Merapi, KAI Logistik targets an increase in transport capacity according to the initial plan, serving up to two train sets per day. In the future, the facility is planned to have two loading and unloading tracks as a precautionary measure against the increasing volume of coal transport in the Sumatra region.
Furthermore, Yuskal explained, “CY 2 Merapi is projected to serve around 730 train sets per year, and with optimal operation of two transport tracks, its capacity could increase to up to 10 train sets per day. Overall, this facility is estimated to contribute to coal transportation of up to 3 million tonnes per year, thereby strengthening the national energy supply chain sustainably.”
