To Serve as a Reference, Peatland Management in Riau to be Replicated Nationally
The Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, is preparing the formation of the National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BPGMN) as a strategic step in restoration efforts. Peatland management practices implemented by local communities in Riau will serve as a primary example for management in other regions.
Raja Juli Antoni shared this following a visit to the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Negotiation House in Tanjung Leban Village, Bengkalis, on Wednesday (30/09/2026). The Minister was accompanied by the Riau Regional Police Chief, the Commander of the XIX/Tuanku Tambusai Military District, peat researchers from the University of Riau, the Acting Governor of Riau, the Regent of Bengkalis, and other regional leadership officials.
Raja Juli stated that the formation of the agency is a follow-up to President Prabowo Subiost’s decision after considering input from scientists and academics. He emphasised that peatland management must be conducted seriously using a research-based approach.
He described the location as a ‘living laboratory’ that can serve as a learning site for the new agency once established. The practices already implemented by the community are expected to be studied and replicated in other areas, particularly within the six provinces prioritised for forest and land fire prevention.
