Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo intends to increase the number of boxing rings in the Kampung Melayu area of East Jakarta to help reduce the incidence of street brawls in the capital. According to Pramono, this plan was inspired by the boxing ring he recently inaugurated under the Pasar Rebo flyover in East Jakarta.

“Since this facility already exists in the Ciracas District, I spontaneously decided to build another similar venue in Kampung Melayu,” Pramlag said during a visit to the Pasar Rebo flyover ring on Monday. Reports from the Mayor of East Jakarta indicate that street brawl numbers in that area have begun to decline following the introduction of the boxing ring.

Pramono hopes that facilities such as these boxing rings will serve as venues for young people to channel their energy and creativity, thereby avoiding brawls. “Hopefully, this will benefit the youth in East Jakarta by ensuring their energy is directed towards productive activities, reducing street fighting, and ideally, encouraging them to participate in maintaining the safety of Jakarta,” he explained.

On Monday afternoon, Pramono officially inaugurated the boxing ring in the Pasar Rebo area. He stated that the facility will be managed jointly by the government and local communities. This collaborative management model is expected to ensure the facility remains orderly, transparent, and supervised, while also preventing illegal levies.

Pramono also emphasised the importance of providing free access to these sports facilities for the public, though he noted that the welfare of coaches must be maintained to ensure sustainable and high-quality training. The boxing ring under the Pasar Rebo flyover, which covers 247 square metres with a 9.5m x 9.5m arena, has been operational since January 2026, with training led by professional boxing communities. Pramono expressed his desire to implement similar facilities across various regions of the capital.
