To Protect Small Businesses, Klungkung Regent Satria to Restrict Modern Retail Development
Klungkung Regent I Made Satria has reaffirmed his commitment to restricting the development of modern retail outlets. This measure aims to prevent the decline of community micro-businesses.
“We will impose restrictions and use specific zones. This is already covered by the regional regulation (perda),” Satria told journalists on Monday (13/4/2026).
He further explained that the regional regulation limits modern retail by emphasising location regulations. This ensures that the presence of modern retail does not disrupt or negatively impact small traders in the surrounding areas.
“For example, they cannot be built near markets or in certain zones. This way, everything can operate smoothly. Modern retail can thrive, and surrounding traders won’t perish due to competition,” Satria clarified.
One firm step taken to implement the Perda is halting or closing modern retail outlets built near people’s markets.
“In Nusa Penida, we have already closed a modern retail outlet because it was built near a market,” he claimed.
The politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) also urged the public to report any modern retail developments that affect small traders in their vicinity.
“We also want the community to collaborate with us by reporting if there is modern retail impacting our micro-businesses,” he concluded.
