To Prevent Floods and Build Climate Resilience, Environment Minister Targets Planting of 2 Billion Trees
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Tree planting is becoming a strategic step in strengthening climate resilience and reducing the risk of environmental disasters. The Ministry of Environment/Environmental Management Agency (KLH/BPLH) is targeting the planting of 2 billion trees throughout Indonesia as part of an effort to improve environmental quality and increase ecosystem carrying capacity.
The Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH, Moh Jumhur Hidayat, stated that a massive tree-planting movement is a concrete step in facing the challenges of climate change, which are increasingly felt by the public. “The Ministry of Environment is conducting massive tree planting with a target of 2 billion trees across Indonesia,” said Minister Jumhur during the peak commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 at the Cibubur Scout Camping Ground and Graha Wisata Pramuka.
According to Minister Jumhur, the programme will be implemented through collaboration involving various parties, ranging from central and local governments to the business world, communities, and the wider public. “Planting 2 billion trees will strengthen climate resilience, maintain water availability, reduce flooding, restore ecosystems, and absorb carbon,” Minister Jumhur told the media.
Minister Jumhur emphasised that trees play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. In addition to helping to absorb carbon emissions, trees also function to increase water absorption, reduce flood risks, maintain soil fertility, and support the sustainability of biodiversity. This planting target aligns with various government efforts to strengthen climate action and increase environmental resilience amidst the increasing frequency of hydrometeorological disasters caused by climate change.
During the peak of the World Environment Day 2026 commemorations, Minister Jumhur, alongside the Deputy Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH, Diaz Hendropriyono, participated in tree planting in open areas at the Cibubur Scout Camping Ground as a symbol of the launch of this wider planting movement. Through this massive movement, the KLH/BPLH hopes to encourage the participation of all elements of the nation in protecting the environment, while strengthening Indonesia’s position as a country actively taking real steps to face climate change. Tree planting is not only an investment for the environment today but also a legacy for future generations.
