To Ensure Safe Homecoming, KAI Divre I North Sumatra Prepares 31 Locomotives and 73 Trains
PT Kereta Api Indonesia Divisi Regional I North Sumatra is preparing 31 locomotives and 73 train sets that have been declared fit for operation to ensure that people’s journeys during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transportation period run smoothly, safely, and on time. This readiness is strengthened through an intensive maintenance program and safety inspections that have been carried out progressively since the beginning of Ramadan.
Acting Head of Public Relations of KAI Divre I North Sumatra, Anwar Yuli Prastyo, said that the readiness of the fleet is the main priority as people’s mobility increases during the homecoming and return flow periods.
The technical team has begun carrying out quarterly (P3) maintenance on CC2010404 and BB3038404 series locomotives. The work includes inspecting the undercarriage, coupling devices, cleaning the battery compartment, electrical equipment, braking systems, and ensuring that the locomotive whistles function optimally.
“KAI Divre I North Sumatra ensures that all vehicles have undergone maintenance according to standards before the Eid al-Fitr transportation begins so that passenger journeys can run more reliably and the potential for disruption can be minimized,” said Anwar, Tuesday (2/24).
Of the total 31 locomotives on standby, 11 units are hydraulic diesel locomotives that are optimized to support the smooth operation of shunting activities and operational flexibility at a number of stations in the North Sumatra region.
In addition to the locomotives, KAI Divre I North Sumatra also operates 73 train sets, including 14 power car units, both integrated with dining cars and stand-alone. All trains are ensured to be in good condition to support passenger comfort during the journey.
Anwar explained that maintenance is carried out progressively, starting from monthly (P1), quarterly (P3), semi-annual (P6), to annual (P12) maintenance at each depot. For locomotives, maintenance is centered at the Medan Locomotive Depot, while train maintenance is carried out at the Pulubrayan Train Depot.
Preventive large-scale maintenance, such as 24-month (P24), 48-month (P48) maintenance, to overhauls, is carried out thoroughly at the Pulubrayan Workshop to maintain the reliability of the vehicles in the long term.
To strengthen safety aspects and provide guarantees to users, KAI Divre I North Sumatra together with the Class 1 Medan Railway Technical Center (BTP) carried out field inspections (ramp checks) on February 2-6, 2026. Based on the results of the joint inspection, all railway vehicles in the North Sumatra region were declared to meet safety standards and are fit to serve passengers during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transportation period.
“KAI Divre I North Sumatra is committed to providing safe, secure, and reliable transportation services for the people of North Sumatra, especially in supporting the smooth flow of this year’s homecoming,” said Anwar. (H-1)
Sugihartono added that they have asked the relevant authorities to immediately carry out road repairs so that it can be completed when the homecoming season begins.
This step is taken as a form of public service and social concern to ensure that people can return to their hometowns safely, orderly, and in an organized manner in the run-up to Eid al-Fitr.
This free homecoming program is part of Bio Farma’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program which is held regularly every year.
Traveling by private vehicle is a popular choice for many people because it is more flexible and comfortable.
