Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has officially inaugurated a boxing and skatepark arena located beneath the Pasar Rebo flyover in Susukan, Ciracas, East Jakarta. Pramono stated that this public sports facility was intentionally introduced as a strategic step to suppress the habit of inter-group brawls among teenagers, which has frequently unsettled the community.

He specifically highlighted the phenomenon of various youth groups that often trigger disturbances in the East Jakarta area. Pramono noted that the presence of this sports arena has proven effective in uniting communities and reducing brawl incidents.

“After seeing this facility, and as explained by the Mayor, there are groups often referred to as gangs in East Jakarta—American gangs, English gangs, Western gangs, and so on. Since having this place, alhamdulillah, the brawls have decreased drastically,” Pramermono said at the Pasar Rebo flyover skatepark boxing ring on Monday (18/5).

He expressed hope that this free open space would serve as an appropriate platform for teenagers to express themselves through directed physical activities. By channeling hobbies into positive outlets, he is optimistic that young people will no longer seek emotional release through street violence.

“Hopefully, this will benefit the young people in East Jakarta, so that their energy is channelled into places like this. This way, they can be more productive, no longer engaging in brawls or street fights. Hopefully, they can also be involved in maintaining Jakarta,” Pramono said.

Pramono also emphasised that this facility would serve as a pilot project for organising other high-risk areas. “East Jakarta is essentially the role model here, because it must be admitted that one of the places where friction often occurs on the ground is in East Jakarta,” he added.

He believes that increasing similar facilities is a crucial solution to ensure the younger generation has creative spaces and avoids unproductive activities. “The more places like this we have, the more creative space for Jakarta’s youth, so their energy will certainly be better channelled compared to staying up late,” Pramono remarked.

Pramono also announced plans to launch the construction of a new boxing arena for youths in the Kampung Melayu area. “Given the success of this project in reducing brawls and fighting, I have decided that we will immediately build another place in Kampung Melayu,” Pramono concluded.
