To Comply with PP Tunas, Chat Features in Games Must Be Disabled for Child Users

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that, as a form of fairness in the future implementation of PP Tunas, the government mandates game developers operating in Indonesia to disable communication features, including chat, for child users under 16 years old. Meutya revealed this step after Roblox, a global-level gaming platform with up to 23 million child users in Indonesia, implemented the closure of communication features in compliance with PP Tunas provisions. “Digital platforms, including games, must also comply with PP Tunas. Because if one is intervened—Roblox has already complied with child protection, for example, but other games do not—then there will be a shift of children playing games, and it won’t solve the problem,” Meutya said at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Thursday. After Roblox had long been partially compliant with PP Tunas, the platform finally decided to fully comply with the regulation following lengthy discussions with the Indonesian government. Roblox’s full compliance with PP Tunas was assessed after the platform committed to special arrangements for child users through the implementation of age verification using “facial recognition” or facial recognition technology. With Roblox complying with PP Tunas provisions, similar steps are expected to be followed by other game developers in the future because games are also included as digital services accessible to children. “This is also for the accountability, transparency, and fairness for all platforms, including digital platforms,” Meutya said. The government has given a deadline to other PSE until 6 June 2026.
