To Commemorate Earth Day, Parts of Jakarta Will Be in Total Darkness Tomorrow Night

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will carry out a simultaneous power outage on Saturday (25/4), as a commemoration of the Earth Day action that fell on 22 April. The DKI Provincial Government has released a list of buildings and several protocol road sections in Jakarta that will be blacked out simultaneously tomorrow. Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi Sadikin, stated that this step is a concrete form of concern for the environment as well as the implementation of regional regulations regarding carbon emission reduction. “The lamp blackout activity aims to encourage energy saving, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and increase public awareness and participation in efforts to prevent and control environmental pollution,” he said in an official statement on Thursday (23/4). This lamp blackout action is scheduled to last for one hour, from 20.30 to 21.30 WIB. This activity is part of the implementation of Governor’s Instruction No. 14 of 2021. In addition to welcoming Earth Day tomorrow, the DKI Provincial Government has also scheduled similar actions on 13 June for Environment Day and 26 September for World Ozone Day. A series of iconic symbols of the Capital will be in total darkness during the action. These locations include the City Hall Building, National Monument (Monas) along with its fountain, Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, Youth Statue, Heroes Statue, to General Sudirman Statue. All government offices under the DKI Provincial Government are also instructed to turn off the lights, except for health facilities such as hospitals and community health centres that will continue to operate normally. In addition to office buildings, the blackout also targets street lighting on protocol and arterial roads in the five administrative city areas. In Central Jakarta, the blackout will be carried out along Jalan Sudirman (Dukuh Atas to Sampoerna Strategic Building), Jalan MH Thamrin, as well as around Jalan Medan Merdeka in front of the Presidential Palace, Jalan Gerbang Pemuda-Jalan Asia Afrika, City Hall Office Yard, Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office. The South Jakarta area will black out lights on Jalan Rasuna Said, Jalan Prapanca Raya, Jalan Sudirman, to the Gerbang Pemuda-Jalan Asia Afrika area. Meanwhile, for the West Jakarta area, the blackout points are focused on Jalan Daan Mogot and Jalan Kembangan Raya, and the West Jakarta Mayor’s Office Complex. In East Jakarta, Jalan Dr. Sumarno, Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, and the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office Complex. In North Jakarta, access to Jalan Yos Sudarso and Perintis Kemerdekaan will be affected, similar to Jalan Dr. Sumarno in East Jakarta. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government also appreciates the participation of the private sector in this action. Several commercial buildings, shopping centres, restaurants, hotels, to apartments in Jakarta are reported to join in turning off the lights as a form of commitment to environmental preservation.
