Jakarta - The Governor of Uzbekistan’s Samarkand Region, Adiz Boboev, stated that tourism cooperation and direct flights from Indonesia are the top priorities during his delegation’s visit.

“Among all the agendas discussed, the opening of direct flights is one of the main priorities for the Samarkand delegation,” said Governor Boboev in his speech at the Indonesia-Uzbekistan Partnership Forum: Presentation of Samarkand Province in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He assessed that the presence of direct flight routes would accelerate the growth of the tourism sector while strengthening business relations between the two countries.

Boboev said the Samarkand Government views Indonesia as a very close and trusted partner because both are considered to have many similarities, from religious values and culture to aligned views in various areas of cooperation.

“In efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, Samarkand considers it important to produce concrete steps that can provide real benefits to both parties, especially in the tourism and business sectors,” he said.

To realise this cooperation, his side proposed several strategic steps, including positioning Samarkand as one of the main tourist destinations in Asia for the international community, including tourists from Indonesia.

Samarkand also encourages the formation of a joint working group to analyse potential and explore more concrete cooperation opportunities in various sectors.

In addition, the Samarkand government also plans to adopt Indonesia’s experience in developing halal tourism, a step believed to provide benefits while strengthening the position of both parties in the Muslim tourist needs-based tourism industry.

“It is also hoped that there will be cooperation with Indonesian companies, especially in hotel management and tourism infrastructure development. Both parties are also encouraged to increase collaboration in promoting each other’s tourism potential,” he said.

Boboev explained that Samarkand is not only one of Uzbekistan’s spiritual centres but is also known as one of the centres of Islamic world civilisation and the gateway to the country’s tourism.

At the forum, opportunities for investment and potential cooperation between Indonesian and Uzbek entrepreneurs were also presented, along with the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in the economic and educational sectors.

There were also cultural arts performances by several Uzbek students currently studying at the Indonesian University of Education (UPI) in Bandung, as well as stands from travel agencies and airlines to that country.
