To Address Waste Emergency, Depok City Government to Process 700 Tons of Waste into Electricity in Bogor

DEPOK, KOMPAS.com – The Depok City Government (Pemkot Depok) has officially taken a strategic step to tackle the waste emergency through the construction of a Waste-to-Energy Electricity Processing facility (PSEL). This step was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Depok Mayor Supian Suri at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (12/5/2026). The project is part of the national acceleration in line with Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 109 of 2025. Depok is one of six priority locations for PSEL development, alongside Lampung, Serang, Medan, Semarang, and Bekasi Regency. “The signing of the MoU is the result of acceleration efforts by various parties both at the central and regional levels,” said Supian Suri in Depok, West Java, on Tuesday. “Alhamdulillah, today we have signed the MoU with Bogor and Danantara, witnessed directly by the Coordinating Minister for Food as the person in charge of the PSEL project,” he added. The government targets that this modern waste processing facility can begin full operations no later than 2028. Under the agreed scheme, approximately 700 tons of waste from Depok City will be sent to the Kayu Manis area in Bogor. There, the waste piles will be converted into electrical energy using environmentally friendly technology. However, Supian acknowledged that PSEL is not the only final solution. This is because Depok still needs to find a way out for the remaining daily waste that is not accommodated in the project. To handle the remaining 500 tons of waste, Pemkot Depok is now exploring research collaborations.
