Commander of the TNI Military Police Centre, Major General Yusri Nuryanto, stated that the TNI is still probing the motives of the attack carried out by four TNI personnel against the Deputy Coordinator of Kontras, Andrie Yunus. He said the ongoing investigation is focused on uncovering the objectives of each perpetrator involved in the incident.

When asked whether the TNI would investigate the possibility of an intellectual author or mastermind behind the attack by the four individuals, Yusri said the case still needs to be thoroughly examined. He then asked the public to be patient.

“So, regarding who gave the orders? That is what we are delving into. We need to gather witnesses and evidence. So we ask for patience,” he said during a press conference at TNI Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon, 18 March 2026.

The TNI has now detained four members of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) suspected of being involved in the attack on Andrie. The four members have been held at the Jakarta Military Police Command (Pomdam) since Wednesday morning.

The four members come from the air force and navy. They are initialled NDP, SL, BHW, and ES. NDP holds the rank of captain, SL and BHW are first lieutenants, while ES is a second sergeant.

The TNI assured that the attack case against Andrie Yunus will be handled through military court mechanisms. Yusri claimed there would be no cover-up in the legal process, including investigating any links between the attack and the victim’s activities, who often criticises the expansion of the military’s role in the civilian sphere during President Prabowo Subianto’s administration.

“We will work professionally and will report on the stages of investigation, filing, and submission of the case file to the military prosecutor for trial,” said Yusri.

Previously, Andrie Yunus, who frequently criticises the TNI Law and the expansion of the military’s role in civilian spaces, was doused with caustic liquid while on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, 12 March 2026. Andrie was splashed with a dangerous solution by two unidentified individuals.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, assessed the acid dousing of Andrie as an attack on democratic values and the enforcement of human rights in Indonesia.

Yusril also urged law enforcement to thoroughly investigate the case. Not only to find the perpetrators and their motives, but also to reveal who is behind the incident.

“I urge law enforcement, particularly the National Police, to ensure a thorough investigation up to the intellectual author, not just the field attackers,” said Yusril in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday, 13 March 2026.
