TNI tells JSC to get tough

JAKARTA: Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Endriartono Sutarto has urged the Joint Security Committee (JSC) to investigate the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) appointing a self- proclaimed governor for Aceh.

"The JSC should investigate so they will understand that we do not want to break the peace deal, but it was GAM that expressed unfriendly gestures," Endriartono said on Monday.

He also said that according to the peace deal, GAM should have started handing in its weapons for supervision by the JSC.

The TNI and police had moved to defensive position, Endriartono said.

"We should have moved forward and the JSC should follow up the decision."

The four-star general said the JSC should take tough action against any violations of the peace deal. "Should we make mistakes the JSC should scrutinize us," he added.--JP.
