Sorong (ANTARA) - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is enhancing security and strengthening intelligence functions following an incident involving a shootout between TNI personnel and an Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Kampung Sori, South Aifat District, Maybrat Regency, Southwest Papua, which resulted in the deaths of two soldiers on Sunday (22/3/2026).

Commander of Korem 181/Praja Vira Tama (PVT), Brigadier General TNI Slamet Riyadi, in Sorong on Sunday, stated that his side has increased vigilance and mapped out vulnerable areas to anticipate potential security disruptions in the region.

“Following this incident, we are increasing vigilance, mapping vulnerable areas, and tightening field surveillance,” said the Regional Commander when met in front of Dr. R. Oetojo Naval Hospital in Sorong City.

He explained that the TNI will strengthen coordination between units, including with the Habema Operation Task Force, which includes soldiers from Marine Battalion 10.

According to him, the division of operational sectors between units under Korem 181/PVT and the Habema Task Force enables a swift response if disruptions occur in the field.

“We are continuously coordinating with the Habema Task Force. With the existing sector division, every potential disruption can be immediately addressed,” he said.

In addition, the TNI is considering adding or shifting troops to bolster security in vulnerable areas.

“Reinforcements are being planned, including intelligence strengthening. Information from the community and intelligence apparatus will continue to be developed,” he stated.

Regarding the attackers, the Regional Commander mentioned that his side has initial indications. However, further information will be provided once field data is confirmed accurate.

“We already have suspicions about the perpetrators, but we will convey it after the information is truly valid,” he said.

He emphasised that the incident will not diminish the solidity between the TNI and the National Police in maintaining security in Southwest Papua.

On that occasion, the Regional Commander also expressed condolences for the fallen two Indonesian Navy soldiers who were part of the Habema Operation Task Force while carrying out their duties for the state.
