TNI Shooting Range Closed Following Stray Bullet Incident Involving UNP Student

The shooting range has been closed following yesterday’s incident, stated the Head of Information for Kodam XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol, Colonel Kav Taufiq, in Padang on Wednesday (3/6/2026). Based on information gathered by Kodam XX, this is not the first time a stray bullet incident has occurred in the vicinity of Padang State University (UNP). Consequently, following an evaluation, the Commander of the Imam Bonjol Regional Military Command (Pangdam) has decided to temporarily shut down the training site.

Taufiq stated that the closure will remain in effect until an internal team confirms that the location is entirely safe for TNI soldiers to use, including measures to prevent any potential future stray bullet incidents. The suspected stray bullet incident occurred on Tuesday (2/6) afternoon, striking the leg of a Padang State University student. Additionally, a man was also injured, sustaining a wound to his arm.

At the time of the incident, Taufiq confirmed that the 897/Singgalang Infantry Battalion was conducting shooting exercises. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the source of the bullets originated from the training area. Currently, an internal TNI investigation team is gathering data to trace the origin of the bullets. In addition to conducting a crime scene investigation at the Padang State University Rectorate area, Kodam Imam Bonjol officials have also taken statements from several witnesses at the scene. Kodam XX has requested that the public allow officers sufficient time to uncover the details of the case, the findings of which will be presented to the public.
