Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the TNI Information Centre (Kapuspen) Major General Muhammad Nas has confirmed that the TNI is ready to be involved in securing a demonstration on Thursday (27/8).

Speaking to ANTARA in Jakarta on Wednesday, Nas said that the task of securing the situation during demonstrations actually falls within the remit of the National Police.

“Security is certainly the task of the National Police; the TNI assists with reinforcement upon request,” said Nas.

When asked how many personnel were ready to be deployed to secure the mass action, he did not provide details.

Meanwhile, the National Police has urged members of the public who wish to express their aspirations to exercise their right to freedom of expression in public in an orderly, peaceful and responsible manner.

Head of the National Police Public Relations Division Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the police respect the right of every citizen to express their opinions in public.

“We respect the right of every citizen to express their opinions in public. We hope that the entire series of activities can take place peacefully, in an orderly manner and conducively,” said Isir.

He said that expressing opinions is part of democratic life and the right of every citizen guaranteed by Law Number 9 of 1998 on Freedom of Expression in Public.

Therefore, Isir urged the public to convey their aspirations with dignity while still paying attention to the rights of other members of the public in public spaces so that the situation remains peaceful and orderly.

“Convey your aspirations in a good manner and continue to respect the rights and freedoms of others to carry out their activities safely and comfortably, together maintaining public security and order,” he said.

Isir said the National Police is ready to provide services to the public so that the entire series of activities for expressing opinions can take place in an orderly and conducive manner.
