TNI Peacekeeping Troops Fall in Lebanon, Legislator: This is a War Crime
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Members of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) have strongly condemned the Israeli military attack that killed an Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldier in the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
Commission I member Yulius Setiarto described the attack as a war crime, stating that peacekeeping forces in conflict areas must not be targeted by military actions.
“We strongly condemn the Israeli military attack that resulted in the death of an Indonesian soldier in the UNIFIL mission. Peacekeeping forces must not be targeted by military attacks. This is a war crime,” Yulius told Kompas.com on Monday (30/3/2026).
Therefore, the attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and cannot be justified under any circumstances.
“They are there representing Indonesia and carrying out the United Nations mandate to maintain regional stability,” he said.
Yulius also called on the Indonesian government to take firm steps through international diplomatic channels, including issuing an official condemnation of the incident.
“The government must take a firm stance and issue an official condemnation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also needs to provide an open and detailed explanation to the public regarding this event to avoid speculation,” he concluded.
In agreement with Yulius, Commission I member from the PKB Faction, Oleh Soleh, also condemned the attack that caused the death of the TNI soldier in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon.
“This is a humanitarian tragedy and a violation of the spirit of world peace,” said Soleh on Monday (30/3/2026).
He urged the government to immediately conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the deployment of TNI soldiers in the UNIFIL mission.
“With the increasingly heated situation due to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, TNI soldiers are at risk of becoming targets of attacks. This must be a serious concern for the government,” he emphasised.
“The safety of the soldiers must be the top priority. Evaluation of assignments, including options for temporary withdrawal of forces in the UNIFIL mission, needs to be considered immediately,” he concluded.
It was previously reported that a soldier from the Task Force (Satgas) of the Indonesian Contingent (Konga) TNI, who was serving in the UNIFIL mission, was reported to have died due to an Israeli attack in Lebanon.
