TNI on involvement in tax affairs: No discussions yet

The Head of the TNI Information Centre, Major General Muhammad Nas, has confirmed that the military has not yet been involved in mapping tax potential in the field. “There have been no discussions or discourse in that direction,” Nas said when contacted by the media in Jakarta on Monday. Nas declined to comment further on the involvement of the TNI in monitoring tax potential at the community level. The Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance has stressed that the involvement of Village Supervisory Non-Commissioned Officers (Babinsa) and Community Security and Order Supervisors (Bhabinkamtibmas) is not to conduct inspections, collect data, or gather tax information, but merely to provide assistance when required. The authority to supervise taxpayer compliance remains fully with DJP officers. “They are not the executors of the supervision or examination carried out by the Directorate General of Taxes, but they provide assistance when we need it,” said Director of Counselling, Services, and Public Relations at DJP, Inge Diana Rismawanti, in Jakarta on Monday. Inge explained that such assistance is only provided under certain conditions, for instance when officers need to visit a taxpayer in a location that requires special handling from a security or transport access perspective. “For example, if there is a taxpayer we know has potential, and we know their address is in a certain place, but it turns out that place might have something that needs guarding or requires special transport handling, we can ask for their help,” she clarified.
