TNI Habema Discovers 5,000 Cannabis Plants in Yahukimo, Papua

The Habema Operations Command (Koops TNI) has once again demonstrated its commitment to protecting the younger generation of Papua from the threat of narcotics. Through the RI–PNG Mobile Border Security Task Force Yonif 725/Woroagi, TNI soldiers successfully discovered and secured approximately 5,000 cannabis plants in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan.

The operation was initiated following reports from the community who suspected cannabis cultivation activity in the interior region. Responding to the information, soldiers conducted an intensive investigation and security patrol, combing through dense forests and steep mountainous areas with very limited access.

Head of Information for Koops TNI Habema, Lieutenant Colonel Arh M. Wirya Arthadiguna, S.H., M.Si., stressed that the operation was carried out in a measured manner to break the chain of narcotics distribution that could destroy the future of the Papuan people.

“Our soldiers risked their energy and safety by penetrating extremely difficult terrain to ensure this threat does not grow. Every cannabis plant found is a concrete step to protect the younger generation of Papua,” Wirya stated.

Based on the search results, soldiers found cannabis fields at two different locations. In addition to the illicit plants, officers also discovered traditional sharp weapons at the second site, which are currently being investigated further by the authorities.

All evidence has been documented and secured for further investigation. TNI Habema is now coordinating closely with the Indonesian National Police and other relevant agencies to uncover the network behind the ownership of the cannabis fields.

This inter-agency synergy is expected to narrow the operational space for narcotics traffickers in the Papua Pegunungan region. The success also underscores that the TNI’s presence in Papua is not only to maintain security stability but also to provide social protection for the community from crimes that disrupt the social order.
