TNI Habema Command Vows to Hunt Down Perpetrators of Civilian Shooting in Yahukimo

Deep sorrow has once again enveloped Yahukimo Regency, Papua Highlands. A tragic incident resulting in the loss of civilian lives has prompted a swift response from the TNI Habema Command to strengthen its commitment to protecting the community from the threat of armed violence. The shooting occurred in Seradala District. Based on preliminary information, three civilians died as a result of the attack, which was allegedly carried out by a group led by Kopitua Heluka, who serves as the Danops Kodap Yahukimo. The central headquarters of the TPNPB has published a statement claiming responsibility for the attack. Head of Information for the TNI Habema Command, M. Wirya Arthadiguna, S.H., M.Si., stressed that his party deeply regrets the loss of civilian lives. He stated that the loss of life due to violence is a humanitarian tragedy that cannot be justified for any reason. ‘We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We are committed to taking selective, measured, professional, and lawful action to provide a sense of security for the community and ensure the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions,’ Wirya asserted. Currently, the authorities are still investigating the full identities of the victims and the comprehensive chronology of the events on the ground. In parallel, the TNI Habema Command continues to coordinate with relevant agencies to conduct investigations, pursue, and enforce the law against the perpetrator group. In carrying out its duties, the TNI emphasises the principle of professionalism while respecting humanitarian values. This step is taken not only to uncover the perpetrators but also as a preventive measure to ensure similar acts do not recur in the future. For the TNI Habema Command, security stability is the main foundation for normalising life in Papua. With a conducive situation, it is hoped that children can return to school, health services can reach remote areas, and the economic activities of residents can resume without the shadow of fear. Concluding his statement, the TNI Habema Command invited all elements of society, from traditional and religious leaders to community figures, to unite and not be easily provoked by unverified information.
