TNI Exchange Fire with OPM in Mimika, One OPM Member Killed
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Papua Koops Patrol Team of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI Papua) engaged in a firefight with the armed group Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) in Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua, on Monday, 2 March 2026. Lt Col Wirya Arthadiguna, head of information at the Papua Koops TNI Papua, said one OPM member was killed in the incident, while six others were detained. ‘The armed group fired on personnel who were carrying out security and evacuation operations. The patrol team returned fire in a measured fashion, resulting in one attacker killed and six others secured,’ Wirya said in a press release on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. A housewife sustained gunshot wounds to her arms and legs as a result of the OPM attack. The patrol personnel who had received reports from local residents moved to the scene, secured the situation, and evacuated the victims to a health facility. ‘Security in the area will continue to be strengthened to ensure the safety of the public and maintain security stability in Central Papua,’ Wirya said.
