TNI Ensures Andrie Yunus Case to be Handled by Military
The TNI Military Police Centre has assured that the case of the attack on Kontras Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus will be handled by the TNI through military judicial mechanisms. TNI Puspom Commander Major General Yusri Nuryanto stated that the decision aligns with Law No. 3 of 2025 on the TNI. The law stipulates that criminal acts involving TNI members are resolved through military courts. Yusri assured that the case will be handled professionally and transparently. “Military trials have always been open; there is no such thing as closed trials,” he said during a press conference at TNI Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon, 18 March 2026. Currently, Puspom TNI has detained four members of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) suspected of involvement in the attack on Andrie. The four members have been held at the Jakarta Military Regional Command (Pomdam) Jaya since Wednesday morning. Motive for the Attack Yet to be Revealed So far, the TNI has not disclosed the motive behind the acid attack involving its members. Yusri stated that the TNI must still conduct further investigations, including examining evidence, witnesses, and receiving case files from the police. Yusri promised to pursue the acid attack case against Andrie to its conclusion. Every stage of the case handling will be announced to the public. “We will inform the stages, starting from the investigation process, filing, and then handing over the files to the military court for trial,” he said. He indicated that the perpetrators will be charged with suspected assault under Article 467 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code. “There are paragraphs 1 and 2, with penalties already stipulated, namely four years and seven years.” Previously, Andrie Yunus, who frequently criticised the TNI Law and the expansion of military roles in civilian spaces, was doused with acid while on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, 12 March 2026. Andrie was attacked with a dangerous solution by two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction. The corrosive chemical liquid affected the right side of Andrie’s body, including his eye, face, chest, and hand. Part of the victim’s clothing also melted due to the acid. Medical examinations showed Andrie suffered serious burns covering 24 percent of his body. Andrie is currently undergoing treatment at the National Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM).
