TNI Denies Viral Claims of Armoured Vehicles Deployed at Monas to Confront Protesters

Videos showing rows of armoured vehicles parked at the National Monument (Monas) area in Jakarta have been circulating widely on social media. The footage has sparked various speculations, accompanied by narratives linking the presence of these defence assets to security measures intended to face waves of mass demonstrations in August 2026.

Responding to these claims, the TNI Headquarters has confirmed that the information is incorrect. The TNI emphasised that the combat vehicles seen in the Monas area are part of a series of exercises ahead of the ceremony for the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Head of the TNI Public Information Centre, Major General Muhammad Nas, stated that the presence of armoured vehicles in the Monas area is part of routine preparations for the upcoming state ceremonies. “It is preparatory training for the ceremony to celebrate the Independence Day anniversary,” Nas said when confirmed on Saturday, 1 August 2026.

Nas reminded the public not to easily believe narratives that cannot be verified, especially those with the potential to trigger unrest within society. “Do not spread hoaxes, let alone provocations,” he added.

The narrative emerged after a video was uploaded via the Instagram account @bintangaja8102. The recording shows several Anoa 6x6 personnel carrier armoured vehicles, produced by PT Pindad, located in the Monas area. The post was accompanied by a caption claiming that these combat vehicles were being mobilised to face mass protests in August 2026. Some circulating narratives even claimed, “Proof of the authorities’ fear of their own people, to the point of acting as if they are at war.”

Nevertheless, the TNI has ensured that these claims do not align with the facts. The armoured vehicles at Monas are part of the technical preparations for the series of commemorations for the 81st Independence Day, which will be held this August. This explanation serves to clarify the various speculations circulating on social media regarding the presence of military hardware in the Monas area ahead of the independence celebrations.
