TNI Commander: Alert Status 1 is a Readiness Drill
TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto has explained his decision to implement Alert Status 1 across all military units. According to Subiyanto, Alert Status 1 is a standard anticipatory measure routinely undertaken by the Indonesian military.
Subiyanto stated that Alert Status 1 is a common military term. “Alert Status 1 is a term regularly used in the military,” he said at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, 10 March 2026.
The TNI frequently implements Alert Status 1 among rapid reaction forces during natural disaster response operations. For example, Subiyanto noted that a military area command (Kodam) may declare Alert Status 1 for a battalion if a natural disaster occurs in its region.
Under Alert Status 1, Subiyanto stated that the TNI will test personnel readiness and material mobilisation requirements. He noted that the recent mobilisation of tactical vehicles and troops from various regions to Jakarta over the past period also forms part of this readiness exercise.
“We measure how many minutes it takes to move personnel from these regions to Jakarta. If something happens in Jakarta, we can respond quickly,” he said. Currently, Subiyanto stated that TNI tactical vehicles have begun returning to their respective units. The TNI will commence security operations for Nyepi Day and Eid al-Fitr celebrations jointly with the police.
However, Subiyanto did not directly answer when asked whether Alert Status 1 relates to the Middle East conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. “This is just a routine matter — Alert Status 1 is standard procedure,” he responded evasively.
When asked whether Alert Status 1 has a specific duration, Subiyanto stated: “There is no set timeframe. Once the readiness exercise is completed and we conduct checks, we return personnel to their units.”
Previously, TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency Head Lieutenant General Yudi Abrimantyo stated that Alert Status 1, issued by TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, was directed to all TNI units.
Alert Status 1 within TNI command represents the highest level of military readiness, whereby all personnel must remain at their barracks, fully equipped with weapons, ammunition, and vehicles to respond to emergency threats.
According to Abrimantyo, the alert status aims to anticipate domestic security developments following strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. These strikes triggered retaliatory attacks from Iran, which launched strikes against several US military bases in Middle Eastern countries.
Consequently, the retaliatory strikes have affected the security of Indonesian nationals in the region. “The TNI, as the vanguard protecting NKRI sovereignty, must anticipate all developments in the global, regional, and national security environment,” he stated when contacted on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
The written order implementing Alert Status 1 was signed by TNI Commander’s Assistant for Operations Lieutenant General Bobby Rinal Makmun in Jakarta on 1 March 2026. The document contains seven key instructions for the TNI, ranging from orders to mobilise personnel and major weapons systems to deploying troops for patrols at strategic locations in Jakarta.
Alert Status 1 remains in effect from the date the order was issued until its completion. “This telegram constitutes an order,” according to the document obtained on Saturday, 7 March 2026.
