TNI chief gets military honor

SINGAPORE (AP): Indonesian defense chief Admiral Widodo A.S.
visited Singapore on Saturday to receive a military honor, the
government said.

Widodo, commander-in-chief of Indonesian Military, was awarded
the Meritorious Service Medal by Singapore's Minister of Defense
Tony Tan.

The award was in recognition of Widodo's role in fostering
closer ties between Singapore and Indonesia's navies while he was
Navy Chief of Staff from 1998 to 1999.

Widodo supported patrols by both countries to combat sea
robberies in the Singapore Strait, the ministry said in a
statement.

Alwi Shihab, Indonesia's foreign minister, also visited
Singapore Saturday, meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Goh
Chok Tong.
