TNI chases armed group abducting nine women in Central Papua
The nine abducted civilians were identified as Nemerina Wamang, 17, who is newly pregnant; Alin Mesawarol, sixth grade; Nopi Aim, fourth grade; Opinte Meswaro, third grade; Yonita Senawatme, 18; Meria Nibilingame, 15; Wena Katagame, 18; Ilimin Onawame, 18; and Miante Nibilingame, 13.
Mimika Military District Commander Lt. Col. Jozanda said here Wednesday night that troops were deployed immediately after receiving reports that civilians had been abducted.
“Don’t worry, we are already pursuing the perpetrators. Hopefully, our troops will find and rescue the victims soon,” he said.
Jozanda condemned the group’s actions as cruel and inhumane, saying the victims were forcibly taken after local residents reported the incident.
The Jila military post received reports that several residents were forcibly taken, including girls in third, fourth, and sixth grades, three 18-year-olds, and a 17-year-old who was newly pregnant.
He said two mothers tried to prevent the group from taking their daughters, but the women were attacked after resisting.
“One mother was shot and killed after refusing to let her daughter be taken. Another was thrown into a ravine and suffered a broken leg,” he said.
The woman who was shot was identified as Neregingget Magai, 48, while the injured woman was identified as Inkolung Aim.
Magai died immediately and her body was cremated that afternoon, Jozanda said. Aim survived and is receiving treatment in Jila.
Jozanda said conditions in Jila had gradually stabilized, although flights were still unable to access the area.
The abduction of the children, pregnant teenager, and other young women occurred on Monday, Aug. 17.
Residents reported that about 15 armed group members were involved in forcibly taking the nine civilians.
“We are investigating where this group came from and will provide further information. It appears to be a new group because its language differs from that of local residents,” he said.
