TNI and Armed Group Exchange Fire in Nduga; Two Reported Dead

Jakarta – Two members of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) were reported killed in an exchange of fire with personnel from Task Force Rajawali VI, Detachment 1, under the TNI Habema Operational Command, near Nonggoloit village, Kenyam district, Nduga regency, Papua Pegunungan. This was stated by TNI Habema Operational Command chief Brigadier General Riyanto.

Riyanto said the exchange took place on Friday (23 October), while personnel were patrolling the area. They became involved in a firefight with the armed group KKB Kodap III/Ndugama-Nderakma.

“Reports received indicate that the exchange of fire occurred when the patrol team followed up information about the presence of the KKB near a residential area. During checks, the group reportedly fired towards the security forces, triggering the exchange of fire,” he said on Saturday (24 October 2026).

Two people suspected of being KKB members died at the scene, while other members of the group fled.

The identities of the two victims have yet to be confirmed and require further examination. During the operation, troops also seized several items, including two air rifles, a bow and arrows, bladed weapons, 18 mobile phones, a handheld radio transceiver, documents, group insignia and Rp88 million in cash.

“Every action by our soldiers is selective, measured, professional and in accordance with the rules of engagement, with public safety as the highest priority,” Brigadier General Riyanto said.

TNI Habema urged all parties to abandon violence, warning that they would otherwise face the security forces.

“To our brothers who are still in the forests and mountains, the way back to your families and communities remains open. Stop the violence and let us work together to build a better life for Papua’s future generations,” Brigadier General Riyanto said.
