Jakarta — Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has assessed that the designation of alert status 1 for all ranks of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) could indicate a serious situation.

“When alert status 1 is activated, everyone is mobilised, so there must be something serious,” said Mahfud when met in Senen, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (10 March 2026).

Nevertheless, Mahfud acknowledged that he did not know with certainty the reason for the alert status designation, much like the public has also not yet received an explanation regarding the rationale for the policy.

“Unless there are concerns from economists saying ‘if this happens, things will collapse,’” he said.

However, the possible cause could be related to various factors, including geopolitical conditions that could potentially affect domestic political and economic stability.

He explained that according to political theory previously presented by Indonesia’s 10th and 12th Vice President Jusuf Kalla, political crises that coincide with economic crises often trigger governmental collapse.

Mahfud also clarified the differences between military alert statuses. According to him, alert status 1 means the entire TNI force must be on full alert for 24 hours. Alert status 3, by contrast, indicates a relatively normal condition with routine duties.

He assessed that the designation of alert status 1 would be quite unusual if the reason were merely to anticipate protest actions. Mahfud stated that during his tenure as Coordinating Minister, the government faced several major demonstrations. However, those situations did not result in the government implementing alert status 1.
