TNI Actions in Forest Fire and Disaster Management Garner Appreciation
The actions of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in handling forest and land fires (karhutla) and natural disasters have garnered significant attention on social media. Soldiers are directly involved in firefighting, evacuations, and the distribution of aid in affected regions.
Defence, Social, and Political Observer Apep Agustiawan stated that the soldiers’ actions on the ground are part of Non-War Military Operations (OMSP) intended to assist the government and citizens. “This proves the TNI’s real work, readiness, close coordination, and commitment to continuously optimising their capabilities and protecting the community,” said Apep on Saturday (12/9).
According to Apep, the cooperation between various elements on the ground accelerates the process of extinguishing forest fires while simultaneously managing humanitarian missions. The presence of personnel in emergency situations demonstrates the TNI’s role beyond the function of national defence.

The management of forest fires in the primary zone of Syamsudin Noor Airport has reached 80% control, thanks to strategies involving peatland wetting and the construction of blocking canals. Based on data as of 8 September 2026, the total indicated area of burnt land across six priority provinces has exceeded 76,922.3 hectares.
Heavy rain in Riau has assisted in extinguishing forest fires in Inhu and Siak. However, new hotspots have emerged in Bengkalis, and joint teams remain on alert in the peatland areas.
Forest and land fires in Klaten Regency, Central Java, have hit 10 sub-districts, with a total burnt area of 157,893 m2 or 15.78 hectares.
