TNGGP extends Mount Gede hiking closure for two weeks

Cianjur (ANTARA) - The Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) has extended the closure of its hiking trails for two weeks until 31 August 2026 as part of post-fire handling at several locations on Mount Gede.

TNGGP Public Relations Head Agus Deni in Cianjur on Wednesday said fire handling on Mount Gede is still ongoing, so hiking remains closed based on a circular from the Head of the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Office.

The extension of the hiking closure is intended to ensure the safety of hikers, tourists, the public and outdoor enthusiasts, as well as to make the control and post-fire handling process more effective.

“The closure has been extended for the next two weeks, precisely until 31 August. Whether it will be extended again or not depends on the post-fire handling after the fire affected several locations, especially at the Wadon crater of Mount Gede,” he said.

“For further information, please contact the service section of the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Office,” he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the fire handling, based on reports from joint officers in the field, no smoke plumes or hotspots were visible at the Wadon crater or other locations in the Mount Gede area, but this must be confirmed before hiking is reopened.

The agency noted that heavy rain over the past two days has greatly helped extinguish the fire that had been seen burning at several locations, especially at the crater site which was difficult for officers to reach.

“We are ensuring the fire is completely extinguished and various post-fire handling measures are being carried out, so that the hiking trails and burned locations, especially at Suryakancana Meadow, can be used again as camping areas for hikers,” he said.
