The Mount Gede Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) Grand Office has extended the closure of climbing routes for an indefinite period to facilitate ecosystem recovery following fires that affected the Suryakancan meadow and Wadon crater.

Agus Deni, Public Relations for the TNGGP Grand Office in Cianjur, stated on Tuesday that the extension is also intended to prevent forest fires during the ongoing prolonged dry season, in accordance with TNGGP Grand Office Head Circular Letter Number 21 of 2026.

“The dry season causes grass and trees within the national park area, particularly near the crater peaks, to dry out, making them highly flammable and prone to fires caused by both natural factors and negligence,” he said.

The climbing routes remain closed until a date yet to be determined, as various risks may arise during this extended dry season, necessitating continuous monitoring and anticipation.

Climbers who have already made online bookings or registrations for climbs scheduled from 1 September 2026 can apply for a refund via the official TNGGP Grand Office WhatsApp number.

“Climbers who have registered since 1 September can request a refund or reschedule their trips through the Simaksi TNGGP application or the official WhatsApp number,” he added.

Authorities have stationed officers at every trail and entry point to prevent illegal climbing during the closure period, and are also involving local communities to assist in monitoring and reporting.

Strict sanctions will be imposed on any climbers found attempting to climb illegally during the closure, ranging from administrative penalties to a total ban from climbing within all national park areas.

“In addition to our officers, we are involving the local communities at the foot of the mountain to monitor and report any illegal climbers found during the closure period,” he concluded.
