Malang, East Java — The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has imposed a closure on the Ranu Regulo tourism area effective Sunday 8 March indefinitely, due to the potential for extreme weather throughout March 2026.

The Head of TNBTS, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, announced in Malang, East Java on Monday that the Ranu Regulo closure was a precautionary measure to anticipate dangerous conditions for tourists.

“This decision to close Ranu Regulo is a form of anticipating and avoiding undesired situations, whilst ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors,” Nugraha said.

The TNBTS officially announced the closure through Circular Number PG.1/T.8/TU/KSA.02.01/B/03/2026 dated 8 March 2026.

The closure follows a warning from Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding potential extreme weather caused by the active Asian monsoon system. The extreme weather is attributed to atmospheric disturbances including low atmospheric pressure, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), and equatorial Rossby waves affecting East Java, combined with elevated sea surface temperatures in the Madura Strait and unstable local atmospheric conditions in East Java.

The extreme weather expected throughout March 2026 will cause heavy rainfall that could trigger disasters such as landslides, fallen trees and strong winds, posing serious risks to visitor safety.

According to TNBTS data, 156 domestic tourists had booked tickets for visits to Ranu Regulo during 8-31 March through the bromotenggersemeru.id portal.

The authority stated it would offer a rescheduling service for visitors, with detailed procedures to be announced closer to the park’s reopening date.
