TNBTS closes Mount Bromo tourism activities during Nyepi
Malang, East Java (ANTARA) — The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has implemented a complete closure of Mount Bromo tourism activities on 19-20 March 2026 to commemorate Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence.
“We are closing the Bromo area on 19-20 March 2026 (Nyepi) with a full closure. We will reopen on 21 March 2026,” said Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of National Park Management for Region I at TNBTS, during a briefing in Malang, East Java, on Friday.
According to the authority’s announcement, the Bromo area closure will commence at 00.00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and will reopen at 12.00 WIB.
The closure of Mount Bromo represents an act of respect and upholds tolerance values towards Hindus observing Nyepi. The TNBTS wishes to ensure that tourism activities do not interfere with the sanctity of this important religious occasion.
Regarding Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran), TNBTS has stipulated that operations will resume following the completion of the Eid prayer. However, this remains dependent on government confirmation of the scheduled date for Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri.
“If Lebaran falls on 21 March 2026, we will open for half a day. After that, we will remain open from early morning until 5 p.m.,” she stated.
The authority has undertaken comprehensive preparations to accommodate tourist arrivals during the Lebaran holiday period, including intensified area monitoring, inspection of public facilities and infrastructure, and coordination with the military, police, and local government regarding security protocols.
Mount Bromo is anticipated to receive at least 5,000 visitors throughout the Lebaran 2026 period.
TNBTS currently maintains a total closure at the Ranu Regulo area with no specified reopening date due to extreme weather conditions. The area will reopen once weather conditions are assessed as safe and pose no risk to tourist safety.
“Because there are many trees in that area, we are concerned about falling trees,” she explained.
