Tito Urges Regional Governments to Accelerate BSPS Programme, Targeting 400,000 Homes
Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian has asked regional governments to accelerate the implementation of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance Programme (BSPS) in order to achieve the target of 400,000 house renovations this year.
The instruction was delivered as the Minister chaired a Meeting on Efficiency and Progress of the BSPS Programme Stages, held in a hybrid format from the Home Affairs Ministry’s central office in Jakarta on Friday (10 July).
“House renovations are roughly 400,000 for this year’s target. We want to speed things up, and it is already July. We want to accelerate so that this programme from the Directorate General of Human Settlements truly meets its target,” said Tito.
Data on prospective BSPS beneficiaries is said to be available. However, some still need to be verified as they do not yet meet the criteria, while regions continue to submit updated data.
Tito assessed that a number of regional governments have not yet given special attention to accelerating the implementation of the BSPS programme. He therefore asked regional governments to ensure that every proposal has been carefully verified in the field so that it meets the established requirements.
“If proposals are simply submitted without meeting the requirements — say the Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas gave a region a target of 200 houses, but only 50 meet the criteria — then the remaining 150 could be handed over to other regions that are better prepared. So colleagues in the regions should not be disappointed later,” he said.
The Minister further urged regional governments to take concrete steps to accelerate the achievement of the 400,000-unit renovation target by ensuring all prospective beneficiaries meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP). To support the acceleration of data collection and verification, he asked regional governments to strengthen collaboration with the Statistics Agency (BPS) in each regency and city.
“The essence is that colleagues in the regions can take steps to support the acceleration of this 400,000-unit target,” said Tito.
The accelerated implementation of BSPS is believed to bring various benefits to the regions. Beyond helping to reduce poverty rates, the programme also has the potential to create jobs, stimulate regional economies, and improve the quality of housing for people still living in uninhabitable homes.
“That is what we hope for — that movement on the ground can gather data, help verify suitability, so that the programme can be executed well,” the Minister concluded.
