Tito Urges Regional Governments to Accelerate BSPS Programme, Targeting 400,000 Homes

Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has requested regional governments accelerate the implementation of the Self-Help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) programme to achieve the target of 400,000 home renovations this year. The directive was issued while the minister chaired a meeting on the efficiency and progress of the BSPS programme stages, held in a hybrid format from the Ministry of Home Affairs headquarters in Jakarta on Friday (10/7). “The target for home renovations is roughly 400,000 for this year. We want to accelerate this so that the programme from the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas truly meets the target,” Tito said. Data on prospective BSPS recipients is reportedly available, but some still requires verification as it does not yet meet the criteria, while regions continue to submit new data. Tito noted that a number of regional governments have not yet given special attention to accelerating the BSPS programme. He urged them to ensure every proposal is carefully verified in the field to meet the established requirements. “If it is submitted carelessly and does not meet the requirements, the target of 200 units for a region, for example, might only result in 50 qualifying units. The remaining 150 could then be reallocated to other, more prepared regions. So, do not let our colleagues in the regions be disappointed,” he stated. The Home Affairs Minister encouraged regional governments to take concrete steps to speed up the achievement of the 400,000-unit target by ensuring all prospective recipients meet the requirements set by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas. To support the acceleration of data collection and verification, he asked regional governments to strengthen collaboration with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in their respective districts and cities. “The point is for our colleagues in the regions to take steps to support the acceleration of this 400,000-unit target,” Tito said. The acceleration of the BSPS programme is believed to offer various benefits for the regions. Besides helping to reduce poverty rates, the programme also has the potential to create jobs, stimulate the regional economy, and improve the quality of housing for people still living in uninhabitable dwellings. “That is what we hope for, that it can move in the field to collect data and help verify eligibility, so it can be executed well,” the Home Affairs Minister concluded.
